Episode 55: "What's Going On"- The Murder of Marvin Gaye
At the peak of Marvin Gaye’s career he was known as the Prince of Motown—topping the charts with his soulful voice with hits like "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)”, “Mercy Mercy Me”, “What’s Going On”, and of course the infamous bedroom love song "Sexual Healing". Throughout his musical career spanning over three decades, Marvin Gaye worked as a recording artist and record producer. The New York Times described him as someone who "blended the soul music of the urban scene with the beat of an old-time gospel singer and became an influential force in pop music”. According to music critic Michael Eric Dyson, Marvin Gaye was “the man who chased away the demons of millions…with his heavenly sound and divine art but was chased by demons of his own throughout his life”. On April 1, 1984, one day shy of his 45th birthday, Marvin Gaye’s life came to a tragic end, when he was shot and killed by his own father. According to some reports, his father Marvin Sr. had harbored significant envy over his son’s success, and his son Marvin Gaye had harbored unresolved feelings toward his abusive father. So, what led to this sinister road of a father murdering his own son.
