Children’s literature has always been vital to society, helping young minds understand complex issues. Many literary experts believe that nursery rhymes often contain hidden meanings, references to historical events or were critical of the political and social climate of the day. Most people are familiar with the nursey rhyme: Do You Know the Muffin Man with its lyrics: Do you know the muffin man /The muffin man, the muffin man? /Do you know the muffin man/Who lives on Drury Lane?  There are different variations of the nursery rhyme, but they don’t deviate much from the original with its origins unclear. Different theories have emerged over the years of who the muffin man was. Many claim that the true story of the Muffin Man is a sinister one about a serial killer in 16th-century London. In this version of the story, The Muffin Man was a pastry chef who killed several of his rivals and more than a dozen children on a street in London called Drury Lane. So does this nursey rhyme have a sinister and dark origin or is it a simple cautionary song.
